About this book
Facino Cane is by Honoré de Balzac, translated by Clara Bell and others. A narrator says he once lived in a little street which probably is not known to you, and describes it as a turning out of the Rue Saint-Antoine, ending in the Rue de la Cerisaie. The narrator says he used to watch the manners and customs of the Faubourg, its inhabitants, and their characteristics. The narrator says he lived frugally and had accepted the conditions of the monastic life, necessary conditions for every worker.
The text says Facino Cane thought, no doubt, that the narrator judged him, as the rest had done, with a disdainful pity. Facino Cane catches up a clarionet and makes plaintive music, playing a Venetian boat-song with something of his lost skill.
