About this book
The Whistler Book is a monograph by Sadakichi Hartmann on the life and position in art of James McNeill Whistler, together with a careful study of his more important works. The book carries fifty-seven reproductions of Mr. Whistler's most important works. The contents list names, among others, a chapter called Quartier Latin and Chelsea.
The text says Whistler frequently sketched directly on copper plates, and carried the prepared plates in his pockets or in a book. Joseph Pennell is quoted as saying that Whistler added a new scientific method to the art of etching. The text says Whistler's unusually low key in the majority of his portraits strikes us as peculiar, even to this day.
