About this book
Under the Red Robe is by Stanley John Weyman. The contents list names, among others, chapters called At Zaton’s, At the Green Pillar and The House in the Wood. A narrator says that when a fool, little knowing the man with whom he had to deal, and as little how to lose like a gentleman, flung the words Marked cards in the narrator's teeth, a score were round.
The narrator says he was given the choice between irons and one of the cells below the level and, choosing the latter, was left to reflect upon many things, among others on the queer and uncertain nature of the Cardinal. The narrator says an escape from unpleasant reflections came only by obtaining the loan of a pair of dice. A speaker asks the other whether he has not heard that his Eminence is disgraced.
