About this book

The Wolf-Leader is a dark fantasy by Alexandre Dumas, published in 1857 and drawn from a folk tale he remembered from his boyhood in the forest country of Villers-Cotterêts. The humble shoemaker Thibault, beaten and cheated by the servants of a great lord, strikes a bargain with a mysterious black wolf that walks upright and speaks: for each wish that is granted, one of Thibault's hairs turns red, and his soul is drawn a little closer to damnation. As he gains power over the wolves of the forest and takes his revenge on his betters, Thibault learns the terrible price of getting everything he ever asked for. Alexandre Dumas wrote at industrial scale, with a workshop behind him, and the most important member of it was Auguste Maquet, who drafted plots and researched the novels that went out under Dumas's name alone.
