About this book
In The Woman Beautiful, or The Art of Beauty Culture, by Helen Follett Jameson, the preface describes the Woman Beautiful as not a radiant creature of gorgeous plumage and artificial beauty, but a woman of wholesome health, good hard sense, sparkling vivacity and sweet lovableness. The preface says the beauty-creed of the Woman Beautiful hangs not from rouge pots and bleaches but from the laws of wise, hygienic living.
The text gives one rule, Don't fret, and says that good nature is a splendid beautifier that brightens the eyes and discourages approaching wrinkles. The book says that Diana of Poitiers, history tells us, was fresh and lovely at sixty-five, and that each morning she took a refreshing bath in a big tub of clear rain-water. The text also says that one nervous woman can create more nervousness among other women than a cageful of mice or a colony of cows suddenly let loose.
