About this book

The Women Who Came in the Mayflower is by Annie Russell Marble. The foreword says the little book is intended as a memorial to the women who came in The Mayflower, and their comrades who came later in The Ann and The Fortune. The foreword says there is no attempt to make a genealogical study of any family, and that the effort is to reveal glimpses of the communal life during 1621-1623.

The text says John Howland fell overboard but caught hold of the topsail halyard which hung extended. The text says Katherine Carver was called a "weak woman" in a reference to her health, which was delicate while she lived at Plymouth. The text says that two children died and were buried in Holland in 1609 and 1617 and, apparently, these were the only children born to the Carvers. The text says the Governor's wife has been accredited with labouring diligently for the improvement of the young women of Plymouth, and that she was the sole executrix of her husband's estate of £1005.
