About this book
The Wampanoags’ dog is described as their only domesticated animal at the time when the Europeans arrived. The account describes formal meals held when a guest arrived and when groups gathered for games and dances, among at least the occasions recorded. Eating took place from individual wooden bowls, using fingers or a spoon according to the consistency of the food being eaten.
Travelers away from home and too far from a settlement to receive hospitality ate from a pouch of parched corn meal. The equipment descriptions identify a leather cornmeal pouch worn around the waist and a tobacco bag carried down the back. The account describes stone tools used for heavy work such as felling trees and dressing game, and increasing substitution of metal tools for stone ones.
