About this book

The Wonders of the Jungle, Book One is a natural history reader for children. Its preface says natural history should be taught to a child from an early age, and that the characteristics of animals are perhaps best set out as a narrative that a child reads almost as a story. The book is described there as a supplementary reader for the earlier grades in grammar schools.

The text speaks straight to the young reader. In one passage you are asked to pretend you are going into the jungle and sitting with the King and Queen of England at a place in India where animals can be watched. It is midnight, and the animals come to a stream to drink while the watchers peep through leaves laid over a net. Another passage describes the parrot, which lives and nests in flocks, and mentions a deserted city called Amber.
