About this book
Brief epigrams, epitaphs and translations share this volume with a detailed record of Byron's publishing history. Ernest Hartley Coleridge's edition gathers seventy-three epigrams and playful pieces, including ten appearing in print for the first time. The preface describes the recovery of poems from earlier publications and manuscripts, notably the complete text of The Devil's Drive, previously printed as a fragment.
The bibliography follows Byron's poems and dramas through editions and translations. Its entries supply dates, publishers and page counts, while distinguishing books Coleridge examined from those known to him through other records. The middle excerpt documents versions of Manfred and editions of Marino Faliero in several languages. Readers can turn to the shorter poems for occasional verse or use the publication records to study how the same works circulated in different forms. The editor's explanations also make the limits of his bibliography clear.
