About this book

The contents of this first volume of Coleridge's poetical works include an epigram on Kepler, a translation of a fragment of Heraclitus, poems titled 'The Three Sorts of Friends' and 'Profuse Kindness', and a group of metrical experiments with titles such as 'Trochaics', 'Iambics' and 'Nonsense Verses'. The list also includes notes by Professor Saintsbury.

An appendix gathers first drafts and early versions, among them three drafts of 'The Destiny of Nations', 'Lewti; or, The Circassian's Love-Chant', 'The Raven' and 'The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere' dated 1798. In one passage the ship is becalmed under a copper sky, with the cry 'Water, water, every where' and short lines such as 'And the Albatross begins to be avenged.' Another passage is a light poem urging people to keep moving and go travelling.
