About this book

A choir teacher in a hill town and a pianist in Paris reveal different sides of musical work in Harriette Brower's collection of biographies. The opening follows Palestrina into church service, where his duties include teaching young singers and directing daily worship. His later appointments in Rome place composition alongside the demands of earning a living and supporting a family. The contents extend the collection to Bach, Beethoven, Debussy and several conductors.

The passage about Chopin concentrates on personal relationships, illness, teaching and performances. It describes his association with George Sand, visits to Nohant, and concerts in Paris and London, including the importance of their earnings. Published in 1922, Brower's narrative sketches offer music students and other readers a way to connect familiar names with particular working lives. Their attention to appointments, teaching and personal circumstances gives the study of musical careers a practical as well as a biographical interest.
