About this book
Frederick Chopin: A Man of Solitude is a book by Guy de Pourtalès. A dedication speaks of offering a soul stricken but still capable of enthusiasm this story of Chopin. A quoted letter regrets that the one addressed is not named Chopinski, or at least that there is not some indication to show that he is Polish.
Chapter XVI is titled The Story of an Estrangement, and its first line says there was a great deal of sickness in Paris. The text says Chopin too tried to put people off the scent, as he had done all those past years, but at length was forced to admit he had not the courage to leave his own hearth for an instant. Chopin says of someone, "A giant!", that he crushes everybody, himself included.
