About this book

In a chalet surrounded by pines, Antony treasures a smiling plaster face that looks exactly like his wife, Beatrice. He bought the cast in a sculptor's shop in Covent Garden and named it Silencieux. Its likeness to Beatrice first delights her, then raises troubling thoughts about whether matching faces might carry matching fates. Antony's declarations of love to the image reveal how strongly a beautiful object can claim his attention.

Richard Le Gallienne's 1900 tale gives the woodland setting an active part in the family's unease. Evening shadows, mist and autumn decay turn familiar surroundings into sources of dread. When Antony urges his daughter Wonder to kiss the mask, her fear gives his devotion a disturbing domestic consequence. The elaborate descriptions and Antony's pleasure in finding words for an insect make this a story for readers interested in poetic prose, unsettling beauty and affection directed toward an image.
