Set during the Jacobite rising of 1745, this adventure novel follows Oliver Wheatman, a Staffordshire yeoman pulled from a quiet farming life into the wake of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s march south. A chance meeting with a woman in distress draws him into spying, danger, and divided loyalties as the Highland army pushes toward London and then falls back. Told in Oliver’s own plainspoken voice, the book mixes swordplay and narrow escapes with a slow-burning romance and a countryman’s eye for the ordinary people caught between king and pretender.
