About this book

A Highland traveller takes the back roads through wet English woodland, using the name Andrew Watson and a story about a coal business to cover his movements. His need for secrecy collides with his temper when he interrupts a gamekeeper mistreating a boy. The rescued lad then guides him through the marshes of Otmoor as pursuit gathers behind them. Mud, rain, hidden paths and suspicious officials give the opening its immediate sense of danger.

Alongside the adventure, the novel makes room for conversations about loyalty, loss and fear. Alastair Maclean speaks of serving his Prince despite his belief that the cause will fail. Johnson admits his dread of death, while the violin-playing Midwinter offers a refuge he calls Old England. Readers interested in political allegiance and the human cost of duty will find those concerns expressed through both urgent action and intimate exchanges.
