Kidnapped
Robert Louis Stevenson set this adventure in the Scottish Highlands of 1751, in the raw aftermath of the Jacobite rising. Orphaned David Balfour goes to claim his inheritance from a miserly uncle, who instead has him seized and packed aboard a ship bound for the colonies and servitude. A wreck throws him together with Alan Breck Stewart, a proud Highland fugitive, and the two make a hunted flight across moor and mountain while a real historical murder tangles them deeper in danger. Stevenson blends breathless escape with a sharp eye for Scottish landscape, dialect, and the divided loyalties of a conquered country. Long shelved as a boys’ adventure, it rewards adult readers just as well. Now offered as a free PDF and EPUB edition.
