About this book

Robert Louis Stevenson set this adventure in the Scottish Highlands of 1751, in the raw aftermath of the Jacobite rising. Orphaned David Balfour goes to claim his inheritance from a miserly uncle, who instead has him seized and packed aboard a ship bound for the colonies and servitude. A wreck throws him together with Alan Breck Stewart, a proud Highland fugitive, and the two make a hunted flight across moor and mountain while a real historical murder tangles them deeper in danger. Stevenson blends breathless escape with a sharp eye for Scottish landscape, dialect, and the divided loyalties of a conquered country. Long shelved as a boys' adventure, it rewards adult readers just as well.
