About this book
The Young Man and the World is a book by Albert J. Beveridge. The preface says the chapters of this volume were, originally, papers published in The Saturday Evening Post of Philadelphia. The preface says a considerable correspondence resulted, and requests were made that the articles be collected in permanent form.
The text says to choose intellectual companions as carefully as you pick your personal comrades, and to read only tonic books, as Goethe calls them. The text also says to mingle with the people, meaning the common people, and to talk with them. The text says thirty minutes each day will give you Blackstone from cover to cover in less than a year, with many holidays. The text tells of a man who was suspicious, distrustful, and feared betrayal here, a Judas there.
