About this book
Edward Everett Hale frames these accounts of travel with talk among children and their Uncle Fritz. In one passage Hester remarks that you can almost tell from the look of a page whether a book will be entertaining, and Uncle Fritz says that human incident is what interests readers, young or old. He mentions "The Vicar of Wakefield" as a book often given to beginners learning English.
The accounts themselves range widely. One passage describes an army of fewer than nine thousand men settling to a long siege of Acre, with the king's tents on a hill called Mount Turon. Another is a sea voyage in which the ship meets the British frigate Stag. A third traveller makes his way near Ascalon to Ramle in company with a Moor. A section heading names Geoffrey of Vinsauf.
