About this book
Letters from a Father to His Son Entering College is by Charles Franklin Thwing, President of Western Reserve University. The prefatory note says parts of the letters that make up this little book were read to the author's own college boys at the opening of a college year.
A writer to his son says the first thing he wishes to say is that he wants him to come out of the college a thinker. Thinking is called a practical art that cannot be taught but is learned by doing. Concentration, clearness, comprehensiveness, complexedness, consecutiveness and continuity are named as the six big C's. The writer tells his son to go at his job with enthusiasm, and adds, "To get enthusiasm in work, work."
