About this book

Chapman Cohen, an English freethinker and secularist, wrote this short treatise in 1921 to argue that the real choice is between belief in God and atheism, with no sound halting place between them. He states his case from the atheist side, and his preface openly says that readers who will not weigh the evidence are not the audience he has in mind.

Part one examines theism. Its chapters ask what the word God means, where the idea came from, whether people have a religious sense, and how the arguments from existence, causation and design hold up. Later chapters turn to the disharmonies of nature, evolution and the problem of pain. Part two deals with the substitutes for atheism, including Herbert Spencer's Unknowable and agnosticism, and ends by discussing atheism and morals.

It is a polemic, not a neutral survey, and it is best read as a clear example of how an early twentieth-century secularist built his argument.
