About this book

An Ostrogothic king's reign gives Thomas Hodgkin a way to explore Italy in the early Middle Ages. His biography follows Theodoric's ancestry, boyhood, campaigns and government, placing the ruler among emperors, rival kings and Roman officials. Chapters on rebuilding cities, repairing aqueducts and encouraging commerce and agriculture widen the account beyond military affairs. The organisation of a kingdom receives attention alongside the conflicts that shaped its borders and alliances.

Rome and Ravenna bring religious disputes, public ceremonies and surviving mosaics into the narrative. Hodgkin's preface recalls a youthful debate about the possibility of a united Italy, explaining his long interest in Theodoric's reign. He also considers the later legends attached to the ruler's name. Readers looking for a historical biography can use this book to examine both the practical concerns of Ostrogothic government and an older historian's interpretation of its promise.
