About this book
The History of England, from the Earliest Times to the Norman Conquest remarks that seventy-five years have passed since Lingard completed his History of England, and that during that period historical study has made a great advance. The book adds that year after year the mass of materials for a new History of England has increased, with new lights thrown on events and characters and old errors corrected.
One account describes Ambrosius Aurelianus, a man of modest temper but of high descent, under whom the patriots dared to challenge the invaders to a pitched battle which, by the favour of the Lord, resulted in their victory. Gildas is said to describe the demoralisation of his countrymen and the outrageous vices of five contemporary British kings. One entry says that in the year 975 there were great disturbances throughout England, and Elfhere the ealdorman ordered the demolition of many monasteries.
