Thirteen months in the Rebel Army, by William G. Stevenson, is described as a narrative of personal adventures in the infantry, ordnance, cavalry, courier, and hospital services. The title page adds an exhibition of the power, purposes, earnestness, military despotism, and demoralization of the South.
The summary of a chapter headed Hospital Service lists, among others, Wounded arriving, Appointment as Assistant-surgeon and Go to Mobile. The narrator says that after commencing service in the cavalry, they spent some three weeks in scouting and foraging, having Nashville for their center. The narrator says he rode as courier several times, on one occasion riding sixty miles from Nashville to Shelbyville in seven hours. The text says mutiny was imminent for some days, and that nothing but the resolute bearing of General Beauregard saved the Rebel army from destruction.
