About this book
Thomas Jefferson is by Henry Childs Merwin. The contents include chapters headed Youth and Training, Monticello and its Household, Envoy at Paris and A Public Man in Private Life. The text says Thomas Jefferson was born upon a frontier estate in Albemarle County, Virginia, April 13, 1743.
The text describes Williamsburg in 1760, when Thomas Jefferson, the frontier planter’s son, rode slowly into town, as consisting chiefly of a single street, one hundred feet broad and three quarters of a mile long, with the capitol at one end, the college at the other. The text says that long struggle led by Hamilton on one side and by Jefferson on the other ended with the election of Jefferson as President in the year 1800. The text says Hamilton’s notion was that mankind were incapable of self-government.
