Woodrow Wilson's George Washington comes with a contents list, a list of illustrations and an index, and a portrait by Gilbert Stuart. The illustrations are drawn from old prints, paintings and drawings. One passage follows the Washington family back to England in the time of Cromwell, where the Reverend Lawrence Washington was put out of his living at Purleigh in 1643 by order of Parliament. His sons turned to Virginia, and John Washington reached the colony in 1656 as "second man" to the merchant and ship-owner Edward Prescott.

Another passage is set on the morning of 17 June, when Boston was preparing to occupy the hills of Charlestown and found that the provincials were already working on redoubts on the height. Three thousand men were put across the water. Behind their unfinished works stood seventeen hundred, and three assaults cost a thousand men. The index names the battle of Germantown and Christopher Gist among its entries.

Woodrow Wilson worked as a political scientist and university president before serving as governor of New Jersey and the twenty-eighth U.S. president. The New Freedom grew from the reform program he presented during the 1912 presidential campaign.
