About this book

John Dewey treats thinking as something that happens within an unfolding experience. In these philosophical essays, collected in 1916, he examines how inquiry changes the relation between a problem, the facts selected to address it and the ideas used to interpret them. Everyday examples give the argument a foothold: drinking water, talking with friends and looking at a picture each become different experiences when the purpose turns toward deliberate investigation.

The collection includes discussions of realism, the control of ideas by facts and the practical character of judgment. Dewey argues that facts and meanings need to remain open to revision as an inquiry proceeds, linking that flexibility to the methods of experimental science. Readers interested in how reasoning works can follow his sustained account of evidence, hypotheses and the circumstances that make a particular detail relevant to a particular problem.

About the author

John Dewey

Dewey argued that a school teaching children to sit still and repeat is training them for a society that no longer exists, and that democracy is less a form of government than a way of living together that has to be practised daily. Democracy and Education is the fullest statement of it.
