About this book
Through Nature to God is by John Fiske, and its preface says a single purpose runs throughout the little book, though different aspects of it are treated in the three several parts. The preface says the first part, “The Mystery of Evil,” was written soon after “The Idea of God” and designed to supply some considerations which for the sake of conciseness had been omitted from that book. The contents list, among others, the parts The Mystery of Evil, The Cosmic Roots of Love and Self-Sacrifice and The Everlasting Reality of Religion, among others.
The text says that from man’s origin we gather hints of his destiny, and that the study of evolution leads our thoughts through Nature to God. The text asks whether the moral sentiment has been flung in from outside or is a natural result of the cosmic process, and answers that clearly it is the latter, with no breach of continuity. The text says the clan has a code of morals well adapted to the conditions amid which it exists.
