About this book

Henri Bergson's book is subtitled An Essay on the Immediate Data of Consciousness and appears in an authorized English translation by F. L. Pogson, with a title page dated 1913. The translator's preface begins with Bergson's birth in Paris on October 18, 1859, and his entry to the École normale in 1878. The book also carries a list of articles and books about Bergson's philosophy, and an index.

In one passage Bergson writes of a duration whose moments permeate one another, and of a qualitative multiplicity beneath the numerical multiplicity of conscious states. He says consciousness substitutes the symbol for the reality, and speaks of the shadow of the self projected into homogeneous space. The index lists entries such as intensity, instinct, inertia and impenetrability, with page references.

Henri Bergson

Bergson argued that time as it is lived cannot be the divisible quantity physics measures, and gave it a name, durée. Creative Evolution added the élan vital, a drive running through evolution for which mechanism alone could not account.
