About this book
Tom gives Mr. Ellsworth a promise that he will consult him before doing anything along the line under discussion, repeating his agreement more briskly when challenged. The scoutmaster thinks Tom would be extremely likely to enlist without that promise, while the conversation raises questions about recruits lying about their age.
Tom receives instructions for finding supplies in alphabetical order, with tomatoes under their initial and salmon under its own. Tom is told to make up requested weights from the biggest cans and to open everything before bringing the supplies up. The instruction given to Tom extends to using chopping and slicing machines.
