Tom Slade on a Transport

Tom Slade on a Transport is by Percy Keese Fitzhugh, author of Tom Slade, Boy Scout and other Tom Slade books, with illustrations by Thomas Clarity. The contents give each chapter a long title, among them "He Gets a Job and Meets Frenchy", "He Hears About Alsace and Receives a Present", "He Sees a Strange Light and Goes on Tiptoe" and "He Goes Below and Gropes in the Dark".

In one passage Tom remembers living with his father in a two-room tenement in Barrel Alley, and the neat Schmitt kitchen where Mr. Schmitt called his wife "Mooder". Pete tells him that two detectives came out from New York to ask about Schmitt. In another passage Tom is marched out with a soldier in front, one behind and one at either side, and Pickles is among the squad of four. Tom goes side by side with his brother, who went out to Arizona when Tom was a troublesome boy. Elsewhere Tom pours a little liquid on wiring at chosen spots and hides the bottle in the bushes.
