About this book

A man comes back to the home of his childhood after hard years, hoping to rest, and finds on the pile of mail a letter from his former wife, Lilla, from whom he has heard nothing for twelve years. It is a square envelope of thick parchment, addressed in high, dashing handwriting. The old Silver place stands in the village of Silver Sands. It was built in Revolutionary times by General Silver, and the last of the family, Standish Silver, was the friend and counsellor of everyone in the village.

In the pages sampled a woman perches on the arm of a man's chair, calls him Father, and tells him she has promised to take a position and ought to go back and start work. In another scene Athalie slams her door in anger after saying she will never have a real home, while Silver tries to stop her and says she will go.
