About this book
The monthly mail brings scattered neighbours to a small post office in the Fraser Valley, where Michael McGrath lets each man find his own letters on the counter. A traveller with photographic equipment meets this former soldier beneath the flag outside his cabin. Michael's flower beds, carefully arranged possessions and ceremonial greetings reveal the care he gives to his surroundings and his role at Grand Bend.
Ralph Connor's story follows the bond between a man's work and his sense of worth. When the traveller and McFarquhar later visit Michael, the garden has become overgrown and the office is closed. Michael's distress over losing his position puzzles his practical friend, who measures the loss in money. Their conversation makes room for both humour and grief, offering readers a portrait of friendship and the personal meaning of public service in a remote community.
