About this book
Charles William Sleeman is the author of Torpedoes and Torpedo Warfare, billed as containing a complete and concise account of the rise and progress of submarine warfare. On offensive torpedoes, the text says there still seems to be a great difference of opinion as to the real value of the Whitehead fish torpedo, and that from a specially built torpedo boat the spar torpedo would seem to be the most effective weapon.
The Lay torpedo boat is said to prove an exceedingly effective submarine weapon if only its speed be increased. Drifting torpedoes under certain circumstances should prove invaluable, the text says, but little or no improvement has been effected in this direction. A description of a towed torpedo boat says that on arriving at such a distance from the enemy as to render an attack practicable the tow line is disengaged, and that the auxiliary boat can be rowed back to the station or ship to which it belongs.
