About this book
Frederick Leslie Robertson, Engineer Commander in the Royal Navy, collected the notes for these essays during two commissions spent near the Admiralty library. His preface says a book describing the materialistic side of naval history in popular language was lacking. The frontispiece shows a sixty-gun ship of the late seventeenth century, from John Smith's Sea-Man's Grammar, 1694 edition, and the book has eight half-tone plates.
One passage tells of gun locks and priming tubes tried in the fleets commanded by Admiral Hawke, and of Sir Charles Douglas, who fitted flint-locks to his ship's guns at his own expense and supplied flannel-bottomed cartridges and goose-quill priming tubes. Another passage discusses how the steam engine affected the ram, the gun and the torpedo.
