About this book
Navies of the World describes the plans, armament and armour of naval vessels belonging to twenty principal nations, together with developments in ordnance, torpedoes and naval architecture. The preface argues that rapid and universal changes in fleet equipment over the past twenty years have made estimates of a maritime power's naval strength useful for only a very limited time.
The description of INTREPID specifies an armoured torpedo vessel with a ram bow, round stern, twin screws and partial sail power. The description of ALARM identifies a partially armoured torpedo gunboat with a ram bow, pointed stern, steering screw and no sail power. The fleet table organises vessel specifications by length, beam, draft, displacement, indicated horsepower, maximum speed and launch date.
