About this book
Torquemada and the Spanish Inquisition presents a history of the Inquisition, with a chapter headed The Inquisition Canonically Established. The chapter states that persecutions for heresy were very rare and very slight for some seven centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire. The explanation rejects mercy as the reason, saying that surviving heresies had lost vitality and were practised in sufficient obscurity largely to escape observation.
An account of an ambush describes assailants entering the Metropolitan Church late on the night of September 15, 1485, to await victims attending their midnight office. Juan de Abadia enters through the main door with his Gascon servant Uranso and another person, while Esperandeu and his companions enter through the sacristy.
