About this book
The Dawn of the XIXth Century in England, with the subtitle A Social Sketch of the Times, is by John Ashton. The heading of Chapter V, dated 1801, lists the Union with Ireland, the Discovery of the Planet Ceres and the High price of meat, among others. The account of the Treaty of Amiens says France certainly came best off, and so the popular voice seemed to think. The terms listed say the islands of Malta, Goza, and Comino were to be restored to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.
The King retires to his favourite sitting-room when the weather is unfavourable, and sends for Generals Fitzroy, or Manners, to play at chess with him. A description says the King, in Roman costume, with flying mantle, is on horseback, facing left hand, and holds a marshal’s baton in his right hand.
