About this book
Tramping with Tramps is subtitled Studies and Sketches of Vagabond Life and is by Josiah Flynt. A letter from the Embassy of the United States of America in Berlin, dated April 19, 1899, tells Mr. Flynt that, as its author sees it, the problems furnished by crime in the United States are of the most pressing importance. The text says that lack of will-power, for example, is one of the first delinquencies noted in criminology, and yet out of prison and in the open the will is one of the criminal's strongest points.
The text describes a man as stupid and less vicious than his American confrère, cautious, suspicious to a degree, ungenerous, but fairly just and square-dealing in the company of his fellows. Slim gets his money and returns to the park where the men are waiting to bid him good-by, and calls Bud aside to hand him a fifty-cent piece, saying he has only enough for his ticket and a dinner on the way.
