About this book
The account describes superstitions in Transylvania and proposes a rough classification of their sources as a way of dealing with the principal superstitions discussed throughout the work. The discussion of Roumenian superstition gives the devil a conspicuous part, with witches and dragons assisting the devils and being credited with particular powers on certain days and at certain places, and records efforts by the Roumenians to counteract such influences.
The deathbed customs require a burning candle in a dying person's hand if remedies fail, because dying without one is considered the greatest misfortune. The rain customs attribute drought to a vampire if the Papaluga also fails to bring the desired rain.
