About this book

Household spirits and fairies of the mines, lakes and mountains fill Wirt Sikes's account of Welsh folklore. Published in 1880, British Goblins concentrates on South Wales while also covering traditions from border counties such as Monmouthshire. The chapters group supernatural beings by their habits and surroundings, placing stories of helpful or troublesome creatures beside accounts of haunted houses and spectral animals. Welsh names and local settings connect these beliefs with familiar places and daily occupations.

The chapter on the Tolaeth examines mysterious sounds taken as warnings of a death or funeral. Footsteps, knocking and the tolling of unseen bells give ordinary noises an unsettling significance in the reported experiences. Other sections describe seasonal celebrations, wedding customs and burial practices, showing how folklore extends into community life. Readers interested in Welsh traditions can compare these accounts of spirits with the customs Sikes records and see how belief shaped interpretations of everyday events.
