True Ghost Stories

True Ghost Stories is by Hereward Carrington. The contents list names headings, among others, The Terror of the Dark, Historic Investigations, Death Coincidences and Photographs of Ghosts. The opening page lists works by the author, among others The Physical Phenomena of Spiritualism and The Coming Science.

A first-person account says that the narrator saw, standing by the side of the bed, a young man dressed in rags with a face ghastly white, and could perceive the opposite wall and furniture through the body. A speaker says of a girl called Louise that she was young, beautiful, and devoted to the speaker, and that on the night of the 26th of August they took their last walk together and a few minutes before midnight paused on a wooden bridge. The text says that among the famous historical hauntings, we must not forget to mention the famous Cock Lane Ghost which occurred about 1760. A paragraph printed in the London Ledger, 1762, tells of a great knocking heard for some time in the night at the officiating parish clerk’s of St. Sepulchre’s, in Cock Lane near Smithfield, to the great terror of the family.
