About this book
The Ghost World, by T. F. Thiselton-Dyer, is a book of chapters on the soul and on ghosts. The contents list chapters on phantom birds, animal ghosts, phantom lights and the headless ghost.
The text reports that the Fijians believe, when anyone dies or faints, that the soul may sometimes be brought back by calling after it. The Rev. W. W. Gill, in his Myths and Songs from the South Pacific, gives a curious instance of the wandering of the soul during life. The book tells of one of the Loyalty Islands, where it was the custom formerly, when a person was very ill, to send for a man whose employment it was to restore souls to forsaken bodies. Boswell is quoted describing a talk at the Literary Club about the Journey to the Western Islands.
