About this book
After a commercial collapse ruins Savory Gray, his friends decide that the former merchant should open a boys' school in the village of Delafield. George William Curtis begins this novel with a dryly comic account of the confidence placed in a man whose good manners exceed his learning. Nearby, wealthy Christopher Burt worries about the school's effect on his orphan granddaughter, Hope Wayne, and tries to manage her future marriage.
The story extends into a world where family affection, business credit and social influence continually overlap. Abel Newt uses a dinner invitation to investigate the income and inheritance prospects of his newly married sister and Alfred Dinks. Elsewhere, Aunt Martha describes a visit from Lawrence Newt with a mixture of fear and remembered kindness. These scenes give readers both pointed social comedy and quieter accounts of vulnerability, making the novel useful for exploring how money and reputation shape personal relationships.
