About this book

A doubtful suit and a horse-racing tip establish the balance of power between Bertie Wooster and his valet: Bertie has money and confidence, while Jeeves supplies the judgment. In these comic stories, published in 1919, their New York circle includes Corky, an aspiring portrait painter whose allowance depends on a wealthy uncle. Corky's engagement creates a delicate problem, since his uncle already disapproves of his artistic ambitions.

The collection also follows Reggie Pepper, whose efforts to help his friends bring a different set of complications. In the seaside setting of Marvis Bay in Dorsetshire, Freddie broods over a broken engagement while Reggie considers how to improve matters. Wodehouse builds the comedy through chatty narration, absurd comparisons and plans that promise more than their makers can foresee.
