About this book

Eighteen-year-old James Douglas has earned his crew's respect, but life aboard the steamer Pericles has become unbearable under Captain Fisher. With his friend Terence O'Meara, the third engineer, he plans to leave the ship at Valparaiso. Their arrival in January 1879 brings a fresh complication: barricaded streets, military preparations and a squadron of Chilian warships entering the harbour.

Harry Collingwood places this adventure for young readers amid the conflict between Chili and Peru. The opening's disputes over shipboard work give way to naval action, with Douglas later directing the transfer of a surrendered crew and arranging repairs to a captured vessel. Engines, guns, lookout duties and decisions about prisoners make the sea fighting concrete.
