At the Paris Observatory, he studies Urania, the muse of astronomy, as changing light alters her expression. When sleep gives her a voice, she leads him upward, and familiar countries shrink beneath them until Earth appears as a distant star.

Camille Flammarion combines astronomical description with imaginative fiction and speculation about human perception. The contents range from the variety of beings in the universe to Mars, while a later passage examines reports of visions linked to distant deaths. Camille Flammarion was sixteen when the Paris Observatory took him on in 1858 as a computer, one of the clerks who ground through the arithmetic of orbits. He lost the post in 1862 after publishing La pluralité des mondes habités, which argued that other worlds carry life.
