About this book
Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, New York is by Charles W. Snell, with Washington, D.C., 1960 given as the place and year. The text says Vanderbilt made the estate his country home for 43 years, from 1895 until his death in 1938. Frederick was a grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the Commodore, who had founded the family fortune in shipping and railroading. Frederick was born February 2, 1856, had attended Yale before entering his father's office, and in 1878 had married Louise Holmes Anthony, daughter of Charles L. Anthony, prominent financier of New York City and Newport, R.I.
A reading room attached to St. James Chapel was established and maintained by Mrs. Vanderbilt for the people of the village. Mrs. Vanderbilt was also responsible for bringing the Red Cross movement to Hyde Park in 1911. A self-guided tour system enables visitors to begin their tour of the mansion immediately upon arrival, and special guide service for groups may be arranged in advance through the superintendent.
