About this book
The Portsmouth Road and Its Tributaries: To-Day and in Days of Old is by Charles G. Harper. A list headed works by the same author names, among others, The Brighton Road, From Paddington to Penzance and The Dover Road. The text asks what a poor Corinthian was to do, and says the only way to earn a living and yet retain the respect of his fellows was to become a stage-coachman.
The text says the young Randoms and Rake-hells of the times became coachmen, and names Sir St. Vincent Cotton, Stevenson of the Brighton Age and Captain Tyrwhitt Jones. The text says that Turner has exaggerated the ruggedness of Hindhead in his picture, and that Cobbett roundly declared the place to be certainly the most villainous spot that God ever made. An entry in Pepys' Diary of August 6, 1668 records getting to Liphook, late over Hindhead, with an old man, a guide, in the coach.
