The preface describes the book as a development of classroom and lecture notes prepared by the author for use in his classes at the University of Illinois. The author says he found such notes necessary because none of the many books on sewerage and sewage treatment was suitable as a textbook covering the entire subject.
The pipe-sizing instructions call for the next largest commercial size when the required diameter is not among the commercial sizes shown. The discussion of sewer hazards notes that asphyxiating or explosive gases are sometimes encountered without warning because they have no odor or stronger sewer odors are present. The population discussion describes estimating district density by comparison with similar districts of known density and multiplying that estimate by the district's area.
