About this book
Walks in Rome is a book by Augustus J. C. Hare, in two volumes, here in a fifth edition of 1875. It is dedicated to his dear mother, the constant companion of many Roman winters. Volume I opens with the arrival in Rome and a chapter of dull-useful information.
The chapters then take up the Corso and its neighbourhood, the Capitoline, the Forums and the Coliseum, the Velabrum and the Ghetto, the Palatine, the Coelian, the Aventine, the Via Appia, and the Quirinal and Viminal. The text quotes other writers, among them About, in French, and Hawthorne on the grounds of the Villa Medici. One passage describes how a forum was laid out with two libraries, one Greek and one Roman. Another recalls Francis of Assisi approaching the Lateran palace.
